Enduring guardianships

WHY DO I NEED AN ENDURING GUARDIAN?

An enduring guardian is someone you legally appoint to make personal or lifestyle decisions for you when you can no longer make your own decisions. You can appoint an enduring guardian to take responsibility for making decisions such as where you live, which doctor you go to, and what medical/dental/optical treatment and other services (e.g. meals on wheels, home care) podiatry you receive.

If you have these documents in place and haven’t reviewed them for a time you should review them to ensure your wishes are capable of being carried out and this could involve making significant changes to reflect your current circumstances.

Is an enduring guardian the same as an advanced directive?

No. Enduring guardianship is about the legal appointment of a person to make health and lifestyle decisions. An advanced directive is a document that sets out your views and wishes about future medical treatment.
